The Maker

Crop fibre · Gin step · BCI certified
This record demonstrates the crop-fibre supply chain — the path cotton takes from a farm field to finished fabric. The key difference from wool: cotton must be ginned (the mechanical separation of lint fibre from cottonseed and plant trash) before it can be spun. This step has no equivalent in wool processing. A 480 kg raw cotton bale yields only 165 kg of spinnable lint — 34.4% lint yield — with the remaining 315 kg as cottonseed byproduct sold as animal feed. The rest of the chain — spinning, weaving, finishing — follows a similar structure to the wool archetypes in DEMO001 and DEMO002.

Why ginning matters: This step does not exist in wool processing. For wool, the raw fleece goes directly from shearing to scouring. For cotton, the gin must first mechanically separate the short, delicate lint fibres from the seed and plant trash before any textile processing can begin. Documenting gin yield proves fibre-to-fabric traceability.
